National Lampoon's Christmas Eve Debacle

This Christmas was a very dramatic one. This was the first Christmas my family has had in Utah since they intitally left the state 25 years ago. We were going to go to the Holt family Christmas Eve party at my grandparent's house in SLC that night, since a lot of the extended family was in town. We were in the family's Nativity play, we were bringing food for the dinner, and had made homemade gifts for the gift exchange. It was a big deal basically and we were leaving early in the afternoon to make sure we got there on time. Bart, Price, and I were about a half hour behind my parents in leaving and were in charge of closing up the house. Bart got the truck ready, I got the my gifts and chips and dip I was bringing, and Price was locking the doors and setting the alarm. So in the confusion and stress of doing all this quickly, Price forgot to actually lock the front door. There's a gap in the front door that he remembered to stuff some towels into it to stop the cold air from getting in, but he forgot to actually lock the door as Bart left to warm the truck up. He set the alarm and we left the house. (Note, we didn't know he forgot to lock the door until it was too late.)

About 45 minutes later, as we were stopped in traffic going through Odgen to get to the freeway, we got a call from my parents who were only in Bountiful, telling us that we needed to turn around because the alarm at the house was going off and the cops were there checking to see if the house was safe. Remember, it was a white-out blizzard on a ridiculously busy night and it was taking us hours to get anywhere since cars were slipping all over the roads. So relunctantly, but concerned, we turned back and headed home. My parent's did the same because they are petrified that someone tried to break into our house on the perfect night to do so. We got home, the cops left, and we were scared because the front door was unlocked and closed, but the towels that had been stuffed in were out, which meant that someone had to have opened the door and then closed it again after the alarm went off. We didn't know who did it until we realized that there was a little tupperware of caramels sitting on the table next to the front door that hadn't been there before. Hmmm. Only in a small town, would a neighbor dropping off a gift actually open someone's door on their own, unnannounced instead of just leaving it on the porch when no one answered the door. Of course, the old man who had done so didn't realize that no one was home and that he had set the alarm off in the process of his intrusion, but he assured us after the fact that they were really good caramels.

So it was late and we'd pretty much missed the party. Even if we had wanted to brave the storm to try to make it down to SLC again, it would have taken us 2 hours to drive down there and we would have been able to stay about a half hour before turning around and heading home again.

Needless to say, it was a Christmas Eve from the movies, like National Lampoons or something. I think Christmas Day made up for it, which was lovely, and we tried to stay positive and happy despite the chaos.

FYI - the choas continued with the day after Christmas ending with a snowmobile at the bottom of the lake...

Missed your family tons at the Christmas Eve party but we were all grateful that J & J's home was safe. The drive would have been miserable. Hope you received the FHE packet that I sent your way. I'm going to use it for my personal scripture study this year. I need it spelled out to be successfull with it.

Have a Happy New Year!!

i wish you were coming here! i'm sad too. maybe the next super cross :) anyways, i have not looked on your blog in forever. and of course you had to have something amazing that you made yourself! i love your tress skirt, it is darling, and stylish, and looks like something that would be a million dollars at anthropologie. great job! i am also very picky with things like that too. so its smart that you just made one the way you wanted it. where did you get the fabric?? so cute. i too like more of the reds for christmas instead of green. my next big purchase will be a sewing machine because of that reason, for curtains, and pillows etc. i also loved those pictures of you and avery with the photo booth. i took some with krew today as well, and they are hilarious. maybe i will show case a few. i can see glimpses of your new place through some pictures, and it looks good from those tiny views! haha but i want to see more. i like your organizing board in the background from pottery barn, i've always wanted that on a wall of mine one day. you look great in your pictures. and i want to say that i can't believe you got that much snow there, but I remember getting that much snow last year. well... maybe not that much as where you are. alpine, and anything north of that always gets hit real hard. how fun though, i miss it a little. not the part where i have to clean it off my car in the morning, but the real feeling of winter. i would love to go up to park city for the weekend, and play in it. you always want what you can't have right. talk to you laters. we'll take good care of the bartia!
